Adult Education Resources

Book Cover for Enhancing Adult Motivation to Learn
Enhancing Adult Motivation to Learn (Wlodkowski & Ginsberg) provides detailed descriptions and rationale for dozens of practical strategies adult educators can use inside and outside their classrooms to enhance motivation and promote learning. It is a book I refer to often when designing instruction.
Book Cover for Facilitating Seven Ways of Learning
Facilitating Seven Ways of Learning (Davis & Arend) is a concise manual that describes seven broad strategies for developing more "purposeful, effective, and enjoyable college teaching".
Book Cover for The Essentials of Instructional Design
The Essentials of Instructional Design (Brown & Green) is a great place to start when designing courses for adult learners. Whether you're designing for the classroom or online environments, it provides a thorough discussion of each step in the design process.
Book Cover for Experience and Education
John Dewey's Experience and Education is foundational text in the world of adult education. In this small but dense book, Dewey contemplates the benefits of a progressive educational style that centers around creating positive educative experiences for learners.
Colorado State University logo plus link to Teaching and Learning Institute
The Teaching and Learning Institute (TILT) at Colorado State University provides many resources for instructors at the collegiate level and beyond. While many of the resources are university-specific, it is a good place to find thorough explanations and examples for a variety of effective teaching strategies.
Logo for Teaching in Higher Ed podcast
Teaching in Higher Ed. is an entertaining educational podcast I listen to on a regular basis. It provides me with a positive community of adult educators in a variety of disciplines (including STEM) and connects me to new resources and ideas to explore.

Industry Training & Workplace Safety Resources

Logo for Pre-Accident Safety Investigations podcast
Pre-Accident Investigations is a fun resource for contemplating a variety of industrial safety concepts. Todd Conklin, the lively host, interviews safety academics and practitioners to provide both theoretical and reality-based perspectives. You might not always agree with what is said, but it will surely encourage you to think critically. I discovered this podcast at a conference I attended in 2016, and it is where I found out about Learning Teams!
Logo for The Safety of Work podcast
The Safety of Work is a podcast that explores academic research in the field of safety. It has helped me learn more about general research methods and how to evaluate research. It has also given me ideas for how to encourage more collaboration between academia and companies who put safety concepts into practice.
Safety Differently movie photo featuring workers on an oil and gas drilling operation
Safety Differently (Dekker) is a 30-minute documentary-style movie that explores the implementation of a new, collaborative safety philosophy in three different companies (oil/gas drilling, a hospital, and a grocery store chain). Its goal is to show the power of using expertise at all levels of an organization, rather than a top-down approach. This is similar to the adult education idea of co-facilitating knowledge with our learners.
Book cover for Turn the Ship Around!
Turn the Ship Around (Marquet) is an organizational leadership book written by a retired naval officer. Throughout his leadership experience on a nuclear submarine, the author explored new ways to push autonomy and decision-making control down the chain of command, to the people closest to the situation. Similar to Safety Differently, Turn the Ship Around shows the power of using and building expertise at all levels to create an organization that learns and adjusts quickly.

 Instructional Design Resources

Logo for Articulate 360 eLearning software program
Articulate 360 is a program you can purchase to create engaging eLearning modules in your organization. I used this at an internship and loved the flexibility and options available to present material and assess learning. It also has a ton of great instructional design resources, as well as an active support community.
Logo for Camtasia audio/video editing software
Camtasia is a professional audio/video recorder and editor that can be used to create videos that can stand alone or be embedded into eLearning modules. It's a bit expensive for individual purchase, but if you have a need to create instructional videos then it's an intuitive, easy-to-use option. (Using a cell phone and this software, I created several short videos that I embedded into my Articulate 360 eLearning modules.)
